Hazel Allen, 85 of New Sharon passed away Saturday morning, February 25, 2017 at the Ottumwa Hospice House in Ottumwa. Hazel Leona Allen, the daughter of Clarence and Venafrum (Horn) Cutshall, was born December 7, 1931 in Madison County, Iowa.

Hazel was a 1949 graduate of Montezuma High School and was the Valedictorian of her class. On January 1, 1950, Hazel was united in marriage to Emil Allen in the Montezuma Methodist Church Chapel. To this union three children were born: Barbara, William and Robert.

Hazel was a homemaker until their youngest son, Robert began school. She then worked for the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa as a Nurse’s Aid in the nursery for 33 years.

Hazel was a wonderful cook and enjoyed baking. Her cinnamon rolls and homemade cottage cheese were to die for. She loved to square dance and enjoyed crocheting, gardening, canning and flowers.

Hazel was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren. Hazel was a faithful member of the Lacey United Methodist Church and attended Bible Study regularly.

Her memory will be cherished by her husband of 67 years, Emil Allen of New Sharon; her three children: Barbara (& Verlin) Proctor of Ottumwa, William (& Cynthia Walker) Allen of Urbandale and Robert (& Randee) Allen of Shoreview, MN; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; her three siblings: Mary Broadston of Montezuma, Dale (& Dorothy) Cutshall of Aurora, CO and Marge Cutshall of Cedar Rapids; and many other relatives and friends.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the funeral with the family present.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue.
