Grate Expectations Re-Opens Monday

One of Oskaloosa’s newest entrepreneurs is Kyle Brown, co-owner of Grate Expectations catering in Oskaloosa.
Oskaloosa, Iowa — Kyle Brown knows a lot about what Grate Expectations has meant to the Oskaloosa community in helping to fill a much needed catering service. When the business became available, he got a call about what his level of interest would be in being a co-owner of the catering business.
Brown, who had just months before started working in an area factory, considered the possibility of returning to the business that had been a big part of his life since 2010. He had worked there previously when then owner Cheryl Appleget brought the Oskaloosa graduate onboard before he attended college, then welcomed him back afterward.
Owning a business like Grate Expectations is something Brown has always wanted to do he told Oskaloosa News. “So having the opportunity, I really couldn’t pass it up.”
Brown said that there are some new things in the works, “we just don’t want to be known as that bar-b-que shop across town,” even though he loves doing the brisket and the pulled pork.
The lunch crowd has long known about the Grate Expectations dining room, but Brown said that the possibilities of opening up the cafe to host nice dinners occasionally on Thursday evenings is something being discussed.
The other co-owner, Errin Keltner bought the business on some encouragement from his wife, Dr. Amy Trussell. Trussell, who frequents the business, heard of the business being for sale and encouraged Keltner to invest in the catering business.
