Gordy touts experience in re-election bid

Mahaska County Courthouse

I talked with county supervisor today Greg Gordy and asked him about his re-election campaign and how he stands on the issues facing residents.

I asked Greg Gordy what he believes Mahaska County can do to entice business to the county. He believes that maintaining and supporting a positive environment for them, and to continue working with them versus against them, helping the individual businesses with what needs they may have.

With the recent flooding, I was curious about the level of support that he brings towards Emergency Management and his impressions on that office. Greg went on to say that Mahaska County has been the largest financial contributor to Mahaska Emergency Management that he is aware of in his 12 years as supervisor. He believes that Emergency Management has helped the community in several of the last disasters that we have had in the county of the last 2 or 3 years, especially in the incorporated areas.

The subject of communication between the county and the various towns in the county could be improved, and how it could help to improve Mahaska County. Greg believes that it isn’t in a bad situation and during his time has worked continuously with ongoing projects especially with the City of Oskaloosa. He believes that there is good communication and cooperation with the entities when situations arise. He mentioned cooperation with other entities in Sheriff’s Patrols, as well as cooperation during emergencies such as the 2008 ice storms when dealing with large power outages. He also mentioned that since he sits on the landfill commission, as it gives him one more avenue for further communication with the other entities of Mahaska County.

I moved onto trying to market Mahaska County and I asked Greg if we needed something similar to the Pow I-80 group of Poweshiek County. Greg informed me that there is already one in the county. MCARD or Mahaska County Ag and Rural Development that is run by Miranda Johnson. Miranda works in conjunction with Oskaloosa Area Chamber and Development as well as the Ag and Rural Development. He also mentioned the Highway 63 coalition as another example of ongoing projects.

Greg concluded our interview by asking everyone for their support and that he appreciates their past support and continued support. He believes that we’ve had a good positive environment in Mahaska County and he hopes to continue on and the public support to help keep Mahaska County moving forward in a positive manner.
