Four in Top 20 as WPU Reaches Finals

Lawrence, Kan.–The Statesmen men’s bowling team fell just short of its first title as it battled all the way to the end at the Jayhawk Collegiate Challenge Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn placed second out of 22 teams with 9,446 pins in six regular games and 16 Baker games. Wichita State (Kan.) topped qualifying just 42 pins ahead of the navy and gold at 9,488.

In bracket play, the second-seeded Statesmen swept both West Texas A&M and Midland (Neb.) 2-0 in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Unfortunately, they could not take down Wichita State in the championship, dropping a 2-1 decision (192-234, 253-216, 201-211).

Alec Dudley of Iowa Central CC claimed the top spot in the individual standings with a 224.2 average. Nick Walker (Sr., Zeeland, Mich., Business Management) headlined the William Penn efforts in regular action, taking fourth (out of 208) with a 216.2 clip. Curtis Majka (Sr., Elgin, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) was right behind him, tying for fifth at 213.2.

Rok Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), in 13th place at 206.3, and Aleksander Kostric (So., Koper, Slovenia, Sports Management), in 17th place at 205.0, also started all six rounds.

Logan Mason (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Business Management) averaged 203.0 pins in four games, while David Decker (Jr.., Peyton, Colo., Physical Education) notched a 164.5 mark in two rounds.

WPU’s second squad was on the lanes as well, taking fifth out of 11 teams in the JV division with 8,224 pins. The crew fell in the quarterfinal round of bracket play to Hastings JV.

Jayson Miner (Fr., Silvis, Ill., Physical Education) was the JV team’s best roller in 14th place at 205.8. Josh Fane (Jr., Brownsville, Wis., Business Management and Accounting) (189.2) and Austin Czerwinski (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Applied Computer Science) (171.3) joined Miner by also starting all six games.

Albert Liggins (Fr., Ravanel, S.C.) produced a 163.4 average in five rounds, while Alex Mitterer (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Psychology and Biology) had a 155.0 clip in four games and Dawson Knight (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Secondary Education) had a 146.0 average in three games.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Moline, Ill. next Saturday and Sunday to compete in the ISYL Leatherneck Classic.
