Four-Game Losing Streak Snapped with 31-Point Thrashing of Threshers
North Newton, Kan.–Thirteen different players scored as the William Penn women’s basketball team rebounded from a tough loss the night before to drop Bethel (Kan.) 79-48 Saturday.
The Lady Statesmen (3-4) had not won in 15 days, but a 45.5%-27.9% edge in shooting made sure the squad’s four-game losing streak came to a close.
The visitors led 36-25 at the break and then limited Bethel to just 17.9% in the second half to pull away.
Orielle Thomas (Sr., Waynesville, Mo., Physical Education) recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The navy and gold outrebounded the Threshers 46-39.
Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) also reached double digits with ten points, while Janay Pritchett (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Biology) just missed the mark with nine points.
Morgan Evans (Sr., Creston, Iowa, Industrial Technology) added eight points and the trio of Makenzie Ficek (Jr., Eugene, Ore., Sociology), Megan Evangelista (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn., Biology), and Arielle McClellan (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Psychology) all finished with six points.
Sarah Martin (Sr., Anthem, Ariz., Physical Education) dished out four assists, while Sam Abens (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education) managed three steals and Golomski blocked two shots.
William Penn, who committed 17 turnovers (23 for Bethel), was exceptional at the charity stripe with a 14-of-15 showing.
“This was a good team win,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “Everyone was real positive and that was the difference. We got out to an early lead and really pushed the pace for some easy scores. This was a nice way to rebound after last night’s tough loss to McPherson.”
Next: The Lady Statesmen will spend much of its Thanksgiving week on the road, playing three exhibition games against NCAA Division II foes. On Tuesday, they meet Wayne State (Neb.) in Wayne, Neb. before traveling to Concordia, Minn. Friday to face Concordia-St. Paul. The week concludes Saturday with the team staying in Concordia to play Northern State (S.D.).
