Five-run inning costs Central baseball team
AUBURNDALE, FLA.— The Central College baseball team carried a 4-0 lead into the fifth inning Monday, but Albion College (Mich.) pushed five runs across in the bottom of the inning on its way to an 8-5 victory over the Dutch.
Getting the start on the mound for the Dutch (1-2), Matt Schissel (senior, Milan, Ill., Rock Island Alleman HS) was dominant through four innings against the Britons (2-2), holding them scoreless. Albion jumped on Schissel in the fifth for five runs, before he was replaced by Seth Eash (sophomore, Kalona, Mid-Prairie HS).
“He was outstanding into the fifth inning,” coach Matt Schirm said. “He lost his command a little bit. He had a few walks that inning and we replaced him.”
Going 3-for-5 at the plate was right fielder Adam Lindell (senior, Denver, Colo., Arapahoe HS). A triple in the fifth inning was followed up by an RBI single in the seventh.
“He’s really locked in right now,” Schirm said. “Pretty much every ball he’s hit has been hard.”
Junior shortstop Noah Stochl (New Hampton) connected on a triple and went 2-for-4.
“Noah’s had a start nice to start to the season,” Schirm said. “He’s had several hard hit balls the last two days and has been a big part of our offense so far.”
Getting on base three times, Garrett Saunders (freshman, Bonaparte, Van Buren HS) scored two of Central’s runs after two walks, one hit and a stolen base.
“He just makes things happen when he is in there,” Schirm said. “He’s been a spark plug for us. He’s a really good offensive player.”
Central returns to action on Tuesday for a nine-inning contest against Thomas More (Ky.), starting at 1 p.m. (Eastern Standard time) in Auburndale.
