Oskaloosa–Eight Statesmen athletic teams were recognized for exceptional work in the classroom in 2018-2019 as they were named NAIA Scholar Teams Monday.

A total of 1,939 programs from within the NAIA received the laurel, paced by Benedictine-Mesa’s women’s golf team being named Scholar Team of the Year with a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average.

The William Penn women’s golf squad, coached by Bailey Rimes, headed the navy and gold with a 3.64 GPA.

The women’s volleyball crew, paced by Coach Aleesha Cleaver, was next at 3.36, while Abby Reynolds’ cheerleading team (3.34) and Steve Tucker’s men’s golf team squad (3.30) were close behind.

Women’s bowling, coached by Brandon Brooks, tallied a 3.14 GPA during the school year, while women’s soccer, under the direction of Jaymee Highcock, had a 3.06 mark.

Mike Christner’s softball team finished the year with a 3.05 GPA, and women’s basketball, led by Steve Williamson, posted a 3.03 mark.

For a team to earn an NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team GPA includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
