Edith L. Rice, 89, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab. Center in Oskaloosa.

Edith was born October 9, 1923, at Armstrong, Missouri, the daughter of Stephen P. and Margaret E. Black Garner. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation she worked as a bookkeeper at Blackford’s Feed Company in Oskaloosa. On December 10, 1944, she was united in marriage to (Robert) Neal Rice at Oskaloosa; he died January 22, 2001. In the mid 1950’s, Edith started Rice Accounting; she had offices in Oskaloosa and Knoxville; she retired from there in 2007. Edith was very active throughout her life. She enjoyed taking all of her grandchildren camping and to the hot air balloon races in Indianola. She also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, reading, fishing and volunteering. She also enjoyed dancing, especially ballroom dancing, of which she taught for a time. She was a very talented seamstress. Edith was a member of the Fellowship Bible Church in Oskaloosa, D.A.R., the O.D.O. neighborhood club, and Family Farm Group. Early in life she had served as a Sunday school teacher and 4-H Leader. Edith delighted in her family, she always looked forward to getting everyone together to visit.

Her family includes her two sons and their wives, Steve and Leslie Rice of Oskaloosa and Larry and Pam Rice of Michigan City, Mississippi; six grandchildren, Adam Rice, Carrie (& Bruce) Taylor, David (& Tonya) Rice, Ryan (& Dana) Rice, Justin (& Lea) Rice, and Gabriel Rice; 10 great grandchildren, Bracken Taylor, Reina Taylor, Theron Taylor, Ethan Rice, Leah Rice, Rachel Rice, Colin Rice, Jacob Rice, Emily Rice and Alice Rice; a brother, John Garner of Oskaloosa; two sisters in law, Marie Hibler of Oskaloosa and Mert Garner of Oskaloosa.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Gwendolyn Rice; a grandson, Larry Rice; and two brothers, William “Bud” Garner and Bob Garner.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Rodney DeRonde officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Monday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives. The family will be at the funeral chapel again on Tuesday from 12 noon until service time so friends and relatives may visit with Larry and Pam.
Memorials may be made to Fellowship Bible Church or New Hope Community.
