Doug graduated from Montezuma High School in 1972. He was a very talented musician and was a member of a band called The Fourth Estate. Following high school, Doug went to Drake University receiving his Bachelor Degree in Journalism and Broadcasting in 1977.

On October 4, 1980, Doug was united in marriage to Kathi Harding. To this union three children were born, Cody, Cory and Cari.

Doug worked for several years at Newton Manufacturing and also ran a D.J. service, Travel Tunes, for several years with his wife.
