Dorothy Atchison
Oskaloosa. Dorothy Atchison, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, March 17, 2011, at the Oakwood Nursing and Rehab. Center in Albia. She was born May 30, 1919, at Delta, Iowa, the daughter of Garrett and Lenna Martin Scharff. On April 11, 1946, she was united in marriage to Thomas Atchison, Jr. at Oskaloosa; he died February 21, 1991. Early on she went to work at General Mills in Oskaloosa. Later she went to work for the old Continental Overall Factory which later became Big Smith Overall Factory. She was a long time member of the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa. She enjoyed gardening, going to the nursing home to visit with the residents, singing and music. She truly enjoyed being a grandma.
Her family includes her two daughters and their husbands: Shirley and David Armistead of Homewood, Illinois, and Mary Jo and Doug Rockwell of Omaha, Nebraska; four grandchildren: Brad, Jenny, Chad (& Jess), and Scott; two great granddaughters: Samantha and Katie; and a brother: Ralph Scharff of Oskaloosa.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters: Sylvia Westercamp, Beulah McVay, and Golda Nicholson; two brothers: Leo Scharff and Donald Scharff.
Funeral services for Dorothy Atchison will be held Monday, March 21, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. in the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Open visitation will be on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. On Monday morning the family will be at the Good News Chapel from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa.
