Community Supports Local Fire Department

Members of the Bussey Fire Department and Mercy One talk Saturday

Bussey, Iowa – It’s a bi-annual tradition around town. The firefighters open their doors and welcome the community into their home, and in turn, the community shows their support for all the hard work and sacrifice the team makes to help the community. Saturday night was just like many others in the past with one exception.

This supper was to be no different, with one big exception: all the proceeds from the dinner were to help only one of them. The mood was much more subdued as the department had recently lost one of its’ own, Jordan McCarty. He wasn’t lost in the line of duty, and that matters little to his friends and colleagues at the fire station. They were putting their efforts on this evening to help those he left behind.

With approximately 20 volunteers, each one there was there because they want to give back to their community. They all arrived to serve spaghetti, cook hot dogs and serve drinks or deserts.

After a landing by Mercy One and a tour of the helicopter, the group cleaned up and prepared for the lighted parade in the evening.

The parade included not only those from Bussey, but also Lovilla, Monroe, Pella, Monroe County Sheriffs, Indiana Township Fire as they proceeded to parade down not only main street, but took nearly every street in town, crisscrossing the town enjoying themselves. When they were finished with Bussey, they turned south to share with those around around them.
