Central women’s soccer team shut out for first loss of the season

ST. JOSEPH, MINN.- Despite Central College women’s soccer team playing a complete game, the squad was unable to find the back of the net as they suffered their first loss of the season to the College of Saint Benedict 1-0.

“Today we fell a bit short against a side that was top ten in the region last year as well as projected top three in the MIAC,” coach Mike Kobylinski said. “With that being said if I go off of today’s performance, I also feel like we have the caliber on this roster to be a force in the region, as well as a force in our league.”

The Dutch out-shot the Bennies 15-13, and they also had more corners 7-4 which was what the coaching staff challenged the team to do.

“Soccer is a funny game,” Kobylinski said. “We felt like this was out most complete game of our first four matches, and yet we lost.”

Goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore (sophomore, Omaha, Neb., Mercy) was once again impressive in goal recording seven saves. Abby Frey (5th-year, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge) was the leader in shots with three while putting two on target.

“They were well coached and well organized,” said Kobylinski. “We had a little lapse on their goal but that didn’t denote the large majority of the game as we felt our team defending was outstanding. We played well in the second half and the women really took the coaching points and applied them.”

The squads next game is on the road again when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin and take on Edgewood Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

“Sitting at 3-1 we still have a lot of momentum,” Kobylinski said. “With six goals for and two against we have proved that we can score against some tough regional competition, and we have also proved that we are a tough side to break down with our stout defense and goalkeeping. I am very happy with where we are as a team, and we are equally as disappointed we didn’t get a result today.”
