Central wins league track and field honors

Central College

PELLA — Central College’s Morgan Darrow (Newell, Storm Lake HS) and the men’s 4×100-meter relay team have been named Iowa Conference outdoor track and field performers of the week.

Darrow was recognized in women’s field events while the relay squad of Trevor Veach (senior, Grinnell), Logan Danko (junior, Centerville), Kyle Wood (senior, Newton) and Allen Scovel (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was cited for track events.

Darrow smashed her own school record in the hammer throw in the Jim Duncan Invitational at Drake University Saturday. Her throw of 168-feet, one inch garnered runner-up honors and topped her previous record of 167-5 in 2011. The mark ranks eighth in NCAA Division III. Darrow also posted a fourth-place finish in the shot put (47-10.75).

Central’s relay team won the event in a time of 41.31, in a field that featured teams from Division I, II and III. The time ranks fourth in Div. III and is faster than the 2011 season-best (41.35) by the same lineup, which placed fifth at the NCAA Championships.

The Dutch play host to the Central Open Saturday at Ron and Joyce Schipper Stadium in Pella. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with running events starting at 11 a.m.
