Central shares lead in own men’s golf tourney
PELLA — Battling breezy conditions, the Central College men’s golf team is tied for first after the opening round of the Central Spring Invitational Friday.
The Dutch shot a 309 in the 14-team field at Bos Landen Golf Club and shares the lead with the University of Dubuque. Wartburg College is third with 315 and Iowa Western CC and Luther College are tied for fourth at 318.
“Even though it was sunny, it was tough conditions considering the wind,” coach Chad Green said. “The course won over the field but the way we played, to be still tied for first, we can only play better.”
Brent Goodenow (senior, Johnston) is tied for second and leads the Dutch with a 3-over-par 74. Dubuque’s Eric Wolfe heads the 87-player field with 73.
“Brent shot well today,” Green said. “He doubled his first hole so he played really well the last 17 holes.”
Justin Livingston (junior, Winterset) and Brent Messmore (senior, Hudson) are tied for sixth at 77 while Adam Squires (freshman, Waterloo, Columbus HS) is tied for 25th with 81 and Matt Vegter (senior, Morrison, Ill.) is tied for 34th with 82.
Central’s Black team is tied for seventh (325) while the White squad is ninth (326) and the Grey team is 13th (339). Jacob Anderson (sophomore, Treynor), part of the Black unit, cracked the top five and is tied for fourth with 76.
Green said the Dutch will pull ahead if they take advantage of their opportunities.
“When we get a good break we need to take advantage of that good break instead of spoiling it,” he said. “It always comes down to the short game—chipping and putting well. If we do that we’ll be just fine.”
The final round of the 36-hole tournament gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday.
