Central rolls to wrestling triangular sweep
OSKALOOSA — Winning 18 of 20 matches, the Central College wrestling team defeated William Penn University 29-10 and Schreiner University (Texas) 59-0.
The two wins improved Central’s overall dual record to 11-4.
The Dutch had a pair of pins in the final bout of each match as Samuel Zook (senior, 285 pounds, Oak Harbor, Wash.) needed just over six minutes of mat time to earn 12 points.
“It’s great to know that you’ve got a guy who can put the exclamation point on it,” Van Kley said. “You always want to start the night strong and finish the night strong and he finished both matches strong.
Luke Condy (junior, Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) was 2-0 on the night, picking up an 8-3 decision against the Statesmen and a 17-1 technical fall against the Mountaineers.
“He really battled and did a good job,” Van Kley said.
Battling back from an early 6-1 deficit, Cooper Stigsell (senior, 174 pounds, Litchfield Park, Ariz., Verrado HS) stormed back for a 10-9 win. The Dutch were hanging on to a precarious 13-10 lead before his decision pushed the margin back to six.
“That was probably William Penn’s best wrestler,” Van Kley said. “He got a take down with literally one second left to win it. That was a really big win.”
A senior-laden lineup led the Dutch against William Penn as three additional seniors picked up wins. Chase Poston (133 pounds, Olympia, Wash.) won by a 13-5 major decision while Carlos Posas (fifth year, 125 pounds, Madera, Calif., South HS) won in a 6-4 decision and Eric Santana (senior, 141 pounds, Palm Desert, Calif.) won 4-3.
“It’s great to see all of them in the lineup,” Van Kley said. “I’m proud of how far they’ve come.”
Central wraps up the dual season with a trio to American Rivers Conference foe Simpson College in Indianola tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
“To get to 12 wins would be a great mark for this team,” Van Kley said. “We’re excited to go for that and hopefully wrap up the dual season strong.”
