Central athletic trainers initiate city proclamation

PELLA—In an effort led by Central College assistant athletic trainer Dustin Briggs, March has been declared National Athletic Training Month in Pella.

Briggs was joined by Central assistant athletic trainer Chris Viesselman and 11 athletic training students at the city council meeting Tuesday night as Pella Mayor James Mueller signed the proclamation.

“Hopefully the proclamation helps some people realize what athletic training is,” Briggs said. “March is the primary month we try to get our name out there and the proclamation is one way to raise recognition.”

The promotion is sponsored by the National Athletic Trainers Association, which represents and supports 35,000 members of the athletic training profession in a variety of settings. This year’s theme is “Athletic Trainers Save Lives.”

Central’s athletic training department raised awareness on campus by posting fliers and selling “I Heart My Athletic Trainer” wristbands, available for $1 in the athletic training room.

Governor Terry Branstad will sign a state proclamation declaring March National Athletic Training Month in Iowa on Thursday.
