Carter places in Central’s first women’s wrestling competition
INDIANOLA — The Central College women’s wrestling team debuted at the Luther Hill Open Saturday at sophomore Emma Carter (freshman, St. Louis, Mo., Parkway West HS) finished in the top six of the 170-pound weight class.
Carter was one of six Central’s wrestlers to compete and led the team with a 3-3 day. She won twice by fall and a third team by a 10-0 technical fall.
Leilani Asis Nonog (freshman, Covington, Wash., Kentwood HS) finished 2-2 at 155 pounds, also winning twice by fall. She was one match away from finishing in the top six as well.
In the 235-pound bracket, Asia Young (freshman, Hoston, Texas, Cypress Ridge HS) finished 2-2 and Selena Snell (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., University Academy) was 1-2. All three of their wins were by fall.
Aniya Coleman (freshman, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill South HS) and Jeanna Hernandez (senior, Slater, Ballard HS) were 0-2 on the day but both got valuable experience on the mat.
“I think we had a good first tournament,” Baynes said. “I think we had some good matches, and some matches we learned from. I couldn’t be any prouder of the team for getting through their first tournament and taking the losses as learning lessons versus taking the negative away from it.”
The Dutch are back in action next Saturday at the Waldorf Open in Forest City.
“We’re going to rest up and get back to work on Monday,” Baynes said. “Our team is either super young or completely new to the wrestling world, so it was a good first tournament to introduce them into collegiate wrestling.”
