Car Theft a Recent Problem in Oskaloosa

With a recent rise in the amount of car thefts reported in Oskaloosa, residents should keep in mind to secure their property when it’s not being attended. Three vehicles have been stolen in recent days with minor damage being reported to the vehicles.

Officer Barb Saville of the Oskaloosa Police Department said that the cars that are being taken have been unlocked, and the keys left within the vehicles. Saville said that, “The keys have not necessarily been left within the ignition, but could have been placed in a console or under the floor mat “the usual ‘hiding’ places which, let’s face it, are not ‘hiding’ places at all.” Saville stated.

A few tips from Officer Saville and the Oskaloosa Police Department to help you keep your car from being stolen:

The easiest prevention – minimally is to take the keys with you as there is no safe hiding spot upon or in the car because we all know them and have used them.  Take your keys and lock your car – don’t give someone the opportunity – they’re walking by, looking and getting into unlocked vehicles then searching the vehicle for a key.

Become a ‘nosy’ neighbor – if someone or something looks out of place don’t hesitate to contact the police.  If someone was around your residence that didn’t belong  you’d want a neighbor to call – become that ‘nosy’ neighbor.  Get a description of the person, car, a license plate number, and be prepared to stay on the line and talk until officers get there.

As most of us know, we feel safe or safer than normal because we live in a small town, but as Officer Saville says, “We are not exempt from crime and actually become more of a target because it’s assumed that people are trusting by leaving their cars and doors unlocked.”
