Bertha “Birdie” Boyer, 101, of Grinnell and formerly of Oskaloosa died Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Grinnell Health Care Center in Grinnell.

Birdie was born Tuesday, June 6, 1911 in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Walter and Anna Bruinsma Dingeman. Following school see worked for a short time at a chicken farm. In 1936, Birdie was united in marriage to Raymond Boyer in Oskaloosa and he died December 9, 1959. Birdie was a lifelong baby sitter and homemaker. Birdie loved to bake. She baked something with the kids and baby sat every day, and was affectionately known as “Birdie Sweet Tooth”. She will forever be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and mother-in-law. Birdie was a member of the First Assembly of God in Oskaloosa.

She is survived by her two daughters: Barb Blackledge of Grinnell and Pat Fox of Oskaloosa; 6 grandchildren: Lance Fox of Oskaloosa, Kenny Grams of Nebraska, Vickie Blevins of Tennessee, and Randy, Ronnie, and Shelly Lisk; and 8 great grandchildren: Bethany, Jessie, Gregory Grams; Brittany and Breanne Fox; and Shawn, Rachell and Joey Blevins; a very special son-in-law who she loved dearly: Richard Fox; 2 special people: Tammy and Margaret “Marge”.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter: Shirley Boyer; 3 sons: Clifford Haines, Lowaine Lisk, and Mike Boyer; a brother: Dan Dingeman; and 3 sisters: Nellie Sizak, Josephine Fisher, and Harriet Haines.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private family graveside services are being arranged by the Bates Funeral Chapel.
No visitation is planned at this time.
