Bertha Beyer, 99, of Lynnville, died Thursday, November 2, 2017, at her home in rural Lynnville. She was born, Sunday, August 25, 1918, in Marion County, the daughter of John and Dena Witzenberg Steenhoek.

Following school, Bertha worked at home and did laundry and other chores for neighbors. On February 22, 1939, Bertha was united in marriage to Gerrit Beyer in Prairie City and Gerrit died in September of 2001.

Bertha helped on the farm milking cows, helping with chores, working in her garden, making her children’s clothes, baking homemade bread and running the dairy. She moved to Oskaloosa in 2001.

Bertha enjoyed sewing, quilting, going to auctions, reading her Bible and was a lifelong follower of Christ. She attended Bethel Christian Reformed Church. She delighted in her family coming to the farm, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bertha is survived by her two daughters: Donna R. (& James) Clousing of Ludington, Michigan and Navonne (& Glenn) Shultz of Lynnville; three sons: Arlo (& Carol) Beyer of New Sharon, Lavern (& Marlene) Beyer of New Sharon and Dennis (& Vickie) Beyer of Barnes City; 15 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a brother, Rueben Steenhoek of Pleasant Hill.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a grandson, Scott Clousing; and brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017. At 11:00 am at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Douglas VanDerPol officiating.
Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Pella. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday, November 17, 2017 after 12 pm in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6 – 8 to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Oskaloosa Christian School.
