Balanced Play Leads Statesmen to Seventh at Ashford Tourney
Riverside–The William Penn men’s golf squad got its taste of the conference tournament venue, so hopefully it is prepared for the national-qualifying event after competing at the Ashford Spring Invitational Friday and Saturday.
William Penn finished seventh out of 11 teams with a final tally of 638 (311-327) at the par-72 Blue Top Ridge Golf Course. The course is the host site for the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships on April 20-21.
League foe Mount Mercy continued its solid campaign, one that might end in an upset of highly-ranked Grand View in two weeks, by winning the team title at 588 (291-297).
Mustang John Milne completed the sweep as he won medalist honors with a 141 (66-75).
Byron Lindeque (Fr., Boksburg, South Africa, Christian Brothers College) showed up at the top of William Penn’s scoring chart by tying for 30th at 158 (77-81), while Evan Thomas (Sr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) was just one shot back in a tie for 32nd at 159 (78-81).
One and two shots back of Thomas, respectively, were Shane Goldsmith (Fr., Benoni, South Africa, St. Dunstans College) and Geoff Dammann (Jr., Wyoming, Midland HS). Goldsmith tied for 37th at 160 (77-83) and Dammann was 39th at 161 (79-82).
Adriaan de Villiers (Jr., Akasia, South Africa, Akasia HS) rounded out the navy and gold scoring in a tie for 44th at 164 (81-83), just six strokes behind his team’s top player.
