Avis Stien, 91, of What Cheer, died Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Keota Health Care Center. Avis Jeneva Stein was born February 22, 1927 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Bertha Axmear Faas.

Avis was a 1944 graduate of What Cheer High School. She began her teaching career at age seventeen.

Avis was united in marriage to Neil Stanley Stein on December 24, 1944.

For the first twenty years of her career, Avis taught in several country schools and then another twenty- five years at Tri-County and Sigourney.

Avis enjoyed riding her motorcycle, reading, sewing, and visiting with friends and family. Avis never hesitated to climb in a tractor to help her husband with the field work, but she preferred watching her grandchildren. Neil and Avis also enjoyed traveling and spent twenty-six winters in Texas.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Stein; two grandchildren, Eric and Carrie Stein; and two sisters, Helen Briggs and Arva Gibson.

Avis is survived by a son, Lonnie Stein of What Cheer; and a great-granddaughter, Shelby Stein of Richland.

Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am on Monday, March 5, 2018 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery at Delta.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to ICOPS.
