Alfred “Ace” Toll, 95, of Oskaloosa and formerly of University Park, died Sunday, November 12, 2017, at the MHP Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born June 11, 1922, in Attica, Iowa, the son of Ira and Nellie Harvey Toll.

Ace graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1940.

Following high school graduation, he moved to Davenport, Iowa, to work for Ralston Purina. After a few years in Davenport, Ace decided it was time to return to Oskaloosa. He moved back and took a job driving taxi cab for the old Oskaloosa Cab and the old Bon-Ton Bakery in Oskaloosa. In the mid 1940’s, he started working for the Oskaloosa School District. Among his many duties with the school system, the old Community Stadium was “his” to manicure. Ace took great pride in making the stadium as pristine as possible for Friday evenings. In 2012, Ace retired from the Oskaloosa Community School district after over 60 years of service.

On July 16, 1957, he was united in marriage to Eunice Hoit at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. Ace and Eunice were married nearly 60 years before Eunice died on January 9, 2017.

Ace was a charter member of the Calvary Bible Church in Oskaloosa where he served as Elder for many years. He was an avid golfer and had 2 “Aces” during his golfing years. He and Eunice were longtime supporters of Oskaloosa Activities, and they especially enjoyed attending events where their grandchildren were participating. He found great joy in having his family around.

His family includes his two daughters: Pam Bixler of Oskaloosa and Patti (& Mikee) Hernandez of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren: Kyle (& Kaitlin) Williams of Oskaloosa and Cally (& Josh) Sytsma of Oskaloosa; a great grandson, Lane Sytsma, and two great grandchildren on the way; two sisters: Wilma Evans of Iowa City and Norma (& Daryl) Walker of Bondurant; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his wife Eunice, Ace was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Marjorie Toll; and a brother, who was killed in WW II, Kenneth Toll.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. in the Calvary Bible Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Dr. Douglas Smiley officiating.
Burial will be in the Bluff Creek Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin in the Bates Funeral Chapel on Tuesday after 1:30 p.m. and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5:30 -7:30 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Calvary Bible Church in Oskaloosa.
