Dixie McCall, 69, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Mahaska Health Partnership under the care of Mahaska Hospice. She was born Monday, January 17, 1949, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Marion and Barbara Johnston Knoot.
Dixie graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1967. Following school, Dixie started a career in what would become her life’s work, caring for people.
On March 28, 1988, Dixie was united in marriage to Robert McCall in Oskaloosa.
Dixie worked at several care facilities in Oskaloosa. In 1993, Dixie and Bob purchased the McCall Residential Care Home from Esther Lanphier where she and Bob cared for veterans for the next 25 years. Dixie received numerous awards and recognitions for the facility and the care she gave her residents. Dixie retired in 2017. She was looking forward to remodeling their home in Oskaloosa.
Dixie loved to travel and always looked forward to trips, especially to the islands of the Caribbean. She had a soft spot for animals and people who were ill. She was a frequent supporter of Animal Rescue League and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. She also enjoyed dancing.
Dixie is survived by Robert McCall of Oskaloosa; a brother: Ed (& Carolyn) Knoot of Oskaloosa; a sister: Becky (& Jim) Eakin of Vermont; four grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; two close veteran friends: Wayne Graves and Jim Bitterlie; and many close friends, including Melody Cochrane.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Nichole Lathrop Corbett; and a sister, Toni Schustjer.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Monday, April 16, 2018, after 1 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Monday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to Stephen’s Memorial Animal Shelter.
