William Penn University Students Present at Alpha Chi National Convention

(Oskaloosa, IA) — Three members of William Penn University’s Iowa Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi, a national collegiate honor society, attended the national convention in Louisville, Kentucky, April 5–8, where they presented original research papers. Aspiring to the academic life, these students joined nearly 400 others at the annual event.
Savanna Hartman (Sr. majoring in Psychology and Human Services) from San Jose, California presented scholarship entitled, “Veteran Population Post-Deployment Mental Health,” wherein she examined the extent and severity of post-traumatic stress disorder among U.S. service vets.
Jaden Miskowiec (Sr. majoring in Psychology and Sociology, Criminology) from Memphis, Tennessee presented, “Extracurricular Activities, Academic Performance, and Delinquent Behavior”. The research hinged on the empirical connections between extracurricular-activity involvement and delinquency as well as educational success.
Claire Simmons (Jr. majoring in Psychology and Human Services) from Williamsburg, Iowa shared insights from her research titled, “Domestic Violence: A Contributing Factor to PTSD,” wherein she examined an extreme yet ubiquitous ramification of spousal abuse.
About Alpha Chi National College Honor Society
Alpha Chi is a national college honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution’s juniors, seniors, and graduate students. Invitation to membership comes only through an institutional chapter. A college seeking a chapter must grant baccalaureate degrees and be regionally accredited. Some 300 chapters, located in almost every state, induct approximately 11,000 members annually. Alpha Chi is distinctive in that it involves members in all aspects of its operation: chapter officer leadership, student representation on the National Council, local chapter event planning, and presenting scholarly programs at national conventions. The William Penn University Iowa Beta Chapter has been in existence since 1962. Dr. Michael Collins, Professor of Sociology, is the chapter’s current faculty sponsor and is Vice President of the Society’s Region IV.
