Francine Smith, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, February 19, 2017, at her daughter’s home west of Oskaloosa. She was born June 10, 1931, in Salem, Iowa, the daughter of Stacy W. and Gwendoline E. Pauly Moeller.

Francine attended school at Houghton, Iowa. She was the oldest of eight children born to Stacy and Gwendoline. She was young when her father died.

Francine went to work as a young teenager helping young families in her church care for their homes. She did this to alleviate some of the financial strain that was placed on her mother following her father’s death.

On October 19, 1963, she was united in marriage to Albert D. Smith in the St. John’s Catholic Church at Houghton, Iowa. Albert died October 29, 2006.

Following their marriage Francine stayed home to care for her family. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa, and was a member of the Sigourney St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary. She had also been a member for many years of the Keokuk County Historical Society.

Francine enjoyed quilting and socializing with her friends. Her life revolved around her church and family. She delighted in spending time with her two granddaughters.

Her family includes her daughter and her husband, Annette (& Steven) Wanders of Oskaloosa; two granddaughters: Lisa Wander and Julie Wander; three sisters: Ruth Ann (& Glenn) Taylor of Fort Madison, Carol Kulpa of Newton and Barbara (& Ron) Niehaus of Sperry, Iowa; four brothers: James (& Eileen) Moeller of Washington, Iowa, Robert Moeller of West Point, Iowa, Bernard (& Donna) Moeller of Keota, and Leroy Moeller of Keokuk.

In addition to her husband, Francine was preceded in death by her parents; a sister in law, Florence Moeller; and a brother in law, Walt Kulpa.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Thursday, February 23, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend John Spiegel officiating.
Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery at Sigourney. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Wednesday morning after 11 in the Bates Funeral Chapel. The family will be at the funeral chapel at 5 p.m. on Wednesday to pray the Rosary that will be led by Reverend Thomas Spiegel. The family will be present to greet friends and relatives from the end of the Rosary until 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
