Hernandez No-Hits William Woods in 10-0 Win

William Penn University Athletics

Joplin, Mo.–Felipe Hernandez (Jr., North Hollywood, Calif., Sociology) was masterful on the mound Friday, tossing the first Statesmen no-hitter in almost three years as the William Penn baseball team shut out William Woods 10-0.

Hernandez, in just his second start in a navy and gold uniform, struck out four and walked one in the program’s first no-hitter since April 17, 2014 (by Corey Lathram). The junior sat down the first 13 batters he faced before allowing a walk in the fifth frame. A WWU player also reached base on a sixth-inning error, but neither runner advanced past first.

The Statesmen (3-2) jumped all over the Owls in the first inning with six runs on eight hits (two WWU errors). Cory Russell (Sr., El Cajon, Calif., Education) hit a two-run double to highlight the frame.

WPU add two more runs in both the third and fifth innings to cap the game’s scoring. Eight different Statesmen tallied a base knock as the victors outhit William Woods 13-0.

Aaron Petrash (Fr., North Miami, Fla., Digital Communication) was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Jeysen Delgado (Jr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology) finished 2-for-3, while Julian Villegas (Jr., Wilmington, Calif., Sociology) and Wilson Lorenzo (So., Fort Myers, Fla., Computer Science) both finished 2-for-4; Villegas also drove in two runs Friday.

Next Up: William Penn remains in Joplin, Mo. Saturday, facing Columbia (Mo.) at 1:30 p.m. and Viterbo at 6:30 p.m.
