Vernice Valery Haigh, 86, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, February 16, 2017, at her home in Oskaloosa. She was born April 11, 1930, in Des Moines, the daughter of Murray and Beatrice LaMadue Robinson.

Vernice attended SMOUSE school in Des Moines because of a heart condition. She went on to graduate from Roosevelt High School with the class of 1948. On December 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Thomas Haigh; Tom died in 2000.

Early on Vernice worked with Tom at Sherwin Williams in Oskaloosa. They later moved to Grinnell and owned and operated Village Decorating. Vernice was a talented home decorator, and helped many people turn their houses into homes. They later moved back to Oskaloosa and Vernice worked with her daughter painting and hanging wallpaper for friends and family. She retired in the mid 1990’s.

Vernice was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, and a former member of P.E.O. She enjoyed working in her yard and watching birds. She also enjoyed watching baseball, especially cheering for the Cubs with her grandson Scott.

Her family includes her two children: Robin Haigh of Oskaloosa and Scott (& Shalina) Haigh of Las Vegas, Nevada; four grandchildren: Mark (& Tami) Van Wyk, Scott (& Megan) Van Wyk, Whitney (& Stephen) Blattler, and Tan Haigh; seven great grandchildren: Dylan Van Wyk, Trey Van Wyk, Reese Van Wyk, Cambell Van Wyk, Isabella Blattler, Delilah Blattler, and Elliot Blattler; and a sister, Adeline Hiatt of Des Moines.

In addition to her husband Tom, Vernice was preceded in death by her parents; a son in law, Vern Van Wyk; a great grandson, Hayden Blattler; and two brothers, Junior and Dwight Robison.

As was Vernice’s wish her body has been cremated.
No services are planned.
A private family burial will be held in the Forest Cemetery at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Central United Methodist Church.
