Dorothy Joan Van Klaveren, 87, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, February 16, 2017, at Northern Mahaska Specialty Care in Oskaloosa. She was born April 17, 1929 in Waterloo, the daughter of George and Jennie Jaquay Cooley.

Dorothy graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the Class of 1947. On December 29, 1948, Dorothy was married to Clyde Eugene Van Klaveren of Oskaloosa.

Dorothy worked as the head bookkeeper of Alsops Department Stores for 30 years, until her retirement.

Dorothy was a member of the Good News Chapel and Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary. Her hobbies included reading books, playing the guitar, she loved angels and fishing with her grandsons.

Her family includes her husband of 68 years; Clyde Van Klaveren of Oskaloosa; a son, Paul (& Maryagnes) Van Klaveren of Harbor Springs, MI: and a daughter, Vickie (& Marvin) Van Der Wal of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren: Amanda (& Doug) Fredericks, Renee (& Lucas) Momrik, Curtis (& Jeanna) Van Der Wal and Cory Van Der Wal; six greatgrandchildren: Barak and Easton Momrik, and Connor, Cole, Hayden and Brecken Van DerWal; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Shirley Hartwell and Maxine Halverson; and a brother, John (Bud) Cooley.

As was her wish, Dorothy’s body has been cremated.
A memorial service will be held at Bates Funeral Chapel on Sunday, March 5, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 5, 2017, from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Forest Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Care Initiative Hospice, 4 S. Main Street, Alba, IA 52531.
