Jazz To Be Celebrated At 25th Annual Indian Hills JAZZFEST

OTTUMWA — A quarter of a century of jazz will be celebrated on the Indian Hills Community College Ottumwa campus this month when the college hosts the 25th Annual Indian Hills JAZZFEST. The weekend of jazz will begin with an opening concert on Friday, Feb. 24, in St. John Auditorium. Then, 16 Iowa high school jazz bands will compete for ensemble and solo awards the following day, also in the auditorium. The opening concert and the full day of competition are free and open to the public.

The opening concert at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 24, will include a performance by the Indian Hills Jazz Band, under the direction of David Sharp. Selections by a dynamic group of guest artists will follow. Among the performers will be saxophonist Tom Hunt from Lawrence, Kans., legendary trumpeter Jim Oatts, guitarist Steve Grismore from the University of Iowa and bassist/composer Jon Schwabe from the University of Northern Iowa.

The high school competition will run from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25. Participating high schools will include: Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Ft. Madison, West Marshall, Washington, Mt. Pleasant, Lamoni, Oskaloosa, Prairie City-Monroe, Moulton-Udell, North Mahaska and Van Meter. Again, the public is welcome to stop by for any portion of the competition to hear these talented musicians.
