Statesmen Reach Century Mark in Road Win
Marshall, Mo.–For the seventh time this season, the William Penn men’s basketball team scored at least 100 points as it defeated Missouri Valley 100-82 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Monday.
In a game postponed since January 14, #2 WPU (23-3, 19-3 Heart) was on fire from the floor to tally its fifth win in a row.
The visitors outshot the Vikings (12-13, 10-12 Heart) 59.0%-38.5% and were better on the glass, 43-33. The contest was tied 5-5 before the Statesmen went on a 10-2 run; they never trailed and were up 45-36 at intermission.
The navy and gold allowed MVC to draw with four at 56-52, but WPU weathered the storm and blew the contest wide open with runs of 8-0 and 7-0.
The Statesmen overcame 17 turnovers and a 16-for-26 free-throw performance with an excellent perimeter effort (12-for-23). Jarvis Haywood (Sr., Charlotte, N.C., Business Management), with five of those three-pointers, and Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education), with another four trifectas, tied for the game high in points with 21 each. The senior duo was a combined 15-for-21 from the field, including going 9-for-13 from deep.
Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) recorded another double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Brandon Trotter (Jr., Louisville, Ky., Kinesiology), with 11 points, and Kordario Fleming (Sr., Memphis, Tenn., Physical Education), with 10, also reached double digits.
Dashawn Benson (Jr., Uniondale, N.Y., Sociology) put eight points on the board, while Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) (six) and Kevin Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md., Physical Education) (five) were productive offensively as well.
Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) was about the only Statesmen cager to struggle shooting the round ball (1-for-6), but he made up for it with team bests in assists (7) and steals (2).
