Long-distance success for Dutch men in Platteville
PLATTEVILLE, WIS. — Sending a handful of competitors to the Wis.-Platteville Invitational Saturday, the Central College men’s track & field team had fast times in the 800 meters, mile and 5,000 meters.
No team scores were kept at the invitational.
Mark Fairley (junior, Dubuque) had a pair of personal bests in the mile run (4:18.02) and 800-meter run (1:57.99). He won the mile and was fourth in the 800.
Kyle Pape (sophomore, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) won the second heat of the 800 meters in 1:59.38 and placed eighth overall. He was 10th in the mile in 4:26.97.
Dropping his career best by .61 seconds, Jon Specht (junior, Dubuque, Hempstead HS) was fifth in the 800 meters (1:58.33).
In the 5,000 meters, Isaac Steffensmeier (senior, Fort Madison) clocked in at 15:31.16 to place sixth. He was also 17th in the 800 meters (2:02.38).
Taylor Donner (junior, Dubuque) was 18th in the mile (4:30.72) and 20th in the 800 meters (2:03.68).
“It was a very good weekend for all of them,” coach Joe Dunham said. “I think we accomplished a lot. We learned about ourselves and how to get to that next level in competition.”
A pair of competitions await the Dutch next weekend as they host the Central Invitational Friday night and a select group will take part in the Iowa Open on Saturday.
