Central falls to No. 11 Wartburg in women’s basketball matchup
PELLA — A 3-point barrage powered the No. 11 Wartburg College women’s basketball team past Central College 92-58 Saturday at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
Central (9-12 overall, 2-10 Iowa Conference) began the game with a 3-2 lead but the Knights hot-shooting was too much for the Dutch to overcome. Wartburg connected on 11-of-26 attempts from beyond the arc.
“Wartburg was a Final Four team last season and I feel like they can get back there again this year,” said coach Chelsea Petersen. “The final score shows how deep Wartburg is overall and how they can take mistakes on our end and convert them into points.”
Sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry) led the Dutch with 13 points and seven rebounds, junior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) had 12 points and freshman forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) had eight points off the bench.
“Overall, I thought we had a great effort,” said Petersen. “I thought our interior post players played really well today.”
Wartburg outrebounded Central 49-29 and shot 47.9 percent from the field.
“Wartburg is an efficient team and you can’t have a quarter of poor defense against them,” said Petersen.
The Dutch continue Iowa Conference play Wednesday at Loras College for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the women beginning at 6 p.m. Loras won the first contest of the year against the Dutch 63-51 January 11.
