William Penn University Athletics

Pella–The Statesmen track and field teams packed the top of almost every leaderboard as William Penn had a wildly successful day at the Central Dutch Athletics Classic Saturday.

William Penn won the six-team men’s race with 220 points, while the women were third out of five squads with 103.5 points (Central won women’s race with 139 points).

Although no new national qualifiers were added to the list Saturday, the navy and gold did capture a hefty load of event wins and also set two school records. Both marks came via Jamal Boma (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management and Physical Education) in the one-mile run and 3,000-meter run. The senior, who broke records set back in 2013, won the 3,000 in 9:09.88 and took third in the mile in 4:30.44.

Of the 17 contested events, 11 were won by Statesmen. Three individuals claimed two crowns each, including Mykeal Holliman (Fr., Rockford, Ill., Industrial Technology), Tristen Elmore (Fr., Ovied, Fla., Physical Education), and Derek Seddon (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Physical Education). Holliman did so in the 200 (23.17 seconds) and 400-meter dashes (51.62 seconds), while Elmore accomplished it in the high jump (6-8) and long jump (22-10.5). Seddon’s titles came in the shot put (53-0) and weight throw (58-7; 59-0 in the prelims)

Chris Leiba (Fr., Olympia, Wash., Business Management) was also first in the 60-meter dash (7.08), Markenson Charles (Sr., Lehigh Acres, Fla., Industrial Technology) beat the competition in the 60-meter hurdles (8.79), Payton Busch (Sr., Centerville, Iowa, Secondary Education) headlined the 800-meter run (1:58.83), and the 4×400-meter relay team crossed the line first (3:32.55).

A quartet of runner-up placings were also secured. Leiba was second in the 200 (23.23), Dajon Shaw (So., Highland Park, Mich., Mechanical Engineering) was second in the 60 (7.10), Zack Johnson (Jr., Decatur, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) was runner-up in the 800 (2:02.08), and Marcus Hastings (So., North Las Vegas, Nev., Sociology) took #2 in the long jump (21-3.5).

Bronze twice went to Michael Hubbard (So., Gary, Ind., Exercise Science) (60, 7.18; 200, 23.31), while teammates Zane Jacobs (Fr., Idabel, Okla., Business Management) (high jump, 6-6), Derrick Smith (Fr., Olympia, Wash., Physical Education) (triple jump, 42-0.5), and Derek Robinson (Jr., Jenks, Okla., Communications) (weight throw, 48-11; 51-1 in the prelims) were third as well.

Asia Laudermilch (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Physical Education) brought home a pair of wins in the women’s sprints, completing the 60 in 8.04 seconds and the 200 in 27.01 seconds.

Sabrina Avery (Jr., Riverside, Calif., Sociology) matched Laudermilch with two high finishes; she was second in both the shot put (36-1.5) and weight throw (44-4). Guadalupe Gonzalez (Jr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) also finished second in the 3,000 in 11:43.51.

Taylor Richardson (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Undecided) (long jump, 15-5.5), Elayna VanArsdale (Fr., Bensalem, Pa., Secondary Education) (shot put, 35-1.25), and Becky Cleppe (Fr., St. Petersburg, Fla., Physical Education) weight throw (43-10) locked down third-place efforts as well.

In addition to all the aforementioned top-three finishes, William Penn produced numerous other scorers as well.

“This has to be our best overall meet in the six years I have been here,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said. “I think the results speak for themselves. I am quite sure everyone on both the men’s and women’s teams scored points today; I am so proud of our teams.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Falls next Thursday and Friday to compete in the Jack Jennett Open hosted by Northern Iowa.
