Mahaska Health Partnership Explains Sepsis
MAHASKA COUNTY – You’ve probably heard of the word sepsis, but do you know what it truly is? MHP Hospitalist Lisa Ruckman, MD, explains the condition and the importance of prevention.
“Sepsis is your body’s extreme response to an infection,” Dr. Ruckman explained. “Sepsis is not a typical illness, it usually occurs in addition to another infection. The problem with sepsis is, it spreads rapidly and causes widespread inflammation, which can lead to extremely lower blood pressure and ultimately, organ damage or even death.”
Though sepsis can occur in anyone, those with a weakened immune system or another illness that is hindering their overall health are at a higher risk. “If you are taking medications that weaken your immune system, are of an advanced age, chronically ill or on multiple medications, or have a medical condition such as diabetes; you need to be extra mindful,” Dr. Ruckman urged. “A simple infection of your respiratory system or urinary tract can develop into sepsis rapidly and put you at risk for severe complications.
“Watch for signs of a fever or chills, symptoms of an infection and shortness of breath,” Dr. Ruckman continued. “If you experience these symptoms, seek immediate medical care, especially if you have a weakened immune system. The quicker we can determine sepsis has occurred, the more likely we will be able to prevent serious health complications.”
In order to diagnosis sepsis, medical tests are required. “Quick diagnosis and treatment are crucial when it comes to sepsis to avoid serious complications,” Dr. Ruckman explained. “At MHP, we have processes and special tests we can perform that allow us to intervene early and offset long-term consequences.
“Should sepsis be diagnosed, hospitalization will occur to closely monitor the condition to treat with fluids and antibiotics distributed through an IV. The most important factor is timing, so watch for symptoms and seek immediate medical care if you fall into the high risk categories.”
