Scouts raise more than $1.3 Million for local Scouting Programs

Oskaloosa’s William Leonard (son of Jamie and Susan Leonard) received the Kernel Award from the Mid-Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America for the 3rd year in a row by selling $2,345.00 of popcorn in Mid-Iowa Council’s Annual Popcorn Sale. William is a member of Boy Scout Troop 71 chartered by the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. The Kernel Award was presented at a special recognition event in Des Moines on December 10, 2016.

Since 1983, Mid-Iowa Council has conducted a Popcorn Sale to support 20,000 members throughout its 27 county territory in Central Iowa. More than 600 volunteers coordinate and participate in the annual Popcorn Sale.

In addition to helping fund their Scouting adventures, the process of planning, selling, and delivering the popcorn helps young people gain positive life skills.

The sale raises more than $1.3 million for local Scouting with proceeds divided between the council and the individual Scout units that participate in the sale. The money is used to send Scouts to summer camps, pay for events like the Pinewood Derby, purchase camping equipment, and fund hundreds of other activities.
