Transgender Day of Remembrance

Oskaloosa, IA.-November 16, 2016. Crisis Intervention Services and PFLAG-Oskaloosa are holding a candlelight vigil on Sunday, November 20th at 6:30 pm to remember transgender people, gender-variant individuals, and those perceived to be transgender who have been murdered because of hate in 2016. The vigil will be held on the Oskaloosa City Square. It is one of many events being held worldwide as a part of the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Crisis Intervention Services provides support and empowerment to victims/survivors of domestic and dating violence and/or sexual assault in 12 counties across Iowa. PFLAG-Oskaloosa is a local chapter of the national Parents and Friends of Lesbian and Gays (PFLAG) organization that seeks to advocate for equality for all Americans. In Oskaloosa, these two groups have joined together to raise awareness of the violence and harassment that is a daily fact of life for many transgender men and women.

Anyone wishing to join and participate in the vigil may either meet at the Oskaloosa Bandstand at the City Square at 6:30 pm or join us for a short walk from St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ to the City Square. The group meeting at St. Paul Congregational Church will meet at 6:15 pm. St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ’s 10:00 am service will also focus on the Transgender Day of Remembrance.

PFLAG-Oskaloosa meets once a month in the meeting room at St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ. For more information on PFLAG-Oskaloosa, please find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/PFLAGOskaloosa. Contact pflagoskaloosa@gmail.com with questions.
