Statesmen 16th at Leatherneck Classic
Moline, Ill.–The William Penn women’s bowling team struggled a bit as it finished outside of the top half at the Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.
WPU was 16th out of 26 teams with 7,904 pins in six regular games and four sets of Baker play. Wichita State (Kan.) topped qualifying with 8,896 pins, but in the end it was #7 seed St. Ambrose defeating #8 seed Viterbo 3-1 in the finals of eight-team bracket play.
Nicole Troha of St. Francis (Ill.) led qualifying with a 210.2 average (1,261 pins).
Bailey Palmer (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Undecided) paced the navy and gold by averaging 174.7 pins in six games, while Stephanie Adams (Sr., Souris, Manitoba, Business Management) was just behind her with a 173.3 average also in six rounds.
Amber Ovel (So., Waterloo, Iowa, Business Management), at 165.3, and Audra Farley (Jr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Education), at 163.0, both rolled four contests, while the duo of Nicole Craft (Fr., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education) and MacKenzie Boyd (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Psychology and Human Services) posted averages of 181.0 and 149.0 respectively in three games each.
Kayla Gifford (Fr., Camanche, Iowa, Biology) (190.0) and Briell Newberry (Jr., Holland, Mich., Elementary Education) (165.5) rounded out the varsity scoring with two starts apiece.
WPU’s JV was on the lanes as well and placed 10th out of 13 JV squads with 6,905 pins. Three Statesmen started all six games, including Cybil Lennie (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Human Services) (161.8), Kaylee Gerken (So., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education) (160.3), and Melinda Garrett (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, General Accounting) (152.3).
Maddison Saner (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa) was next with a 131.4 clip in five rounds, while Lindsey Howard (Fr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Psychology and Sociology) (146.3) and Rachel Wesely (Fr., Dallas City, Ill., Sociology) (137.0) both competed in three games. Elizabeth Christy (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Digital Communication) also knocked down 149 pins in her lone start.
Next Up: William Penn is off until after Thanksgiving break, traveling to Madison, Wis. on December 3-4 to compete in the Ebonite Warhawk Open.
