Springfield, Mo.–Camila Parra (Jr., Brisbane, Australia, Exercise Science) scored twice to lead the William Penn women’s soccer team to a 5-1 Heart of America Athletic Conference win over Evangel Saturday.

The victory, which included a lopsided 27-4 edge in shots for WPU, snapped a three-game losing streak for the Statesmen (5-9-1, 3-6-1 Heart).

Alyce Correia (Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) got the Statesmen on the board as she scored off a pass from AnnaMarie Urps (So., Wilton, Calif., Physical Education) just 4:44 into the day.

Parra, who guided the offense with six shots, doubled the advantage five minutes later with the assist going to Correia.

Bre Johnson (Jr., Arvada, Colo., Information Technology) got into the action in the 19th minute; Mariah Voight (So., La Mesa, Calif., Sociology/Psychology) was credited with the help.

The Crusaders (5-11, 1-9 Heart) then narrowed the margin with their lone goal at 26:34, but WPU answered right back just over two minutes later as Urps tallied an unassisted goal.

Camila Parra (Jr., Brisbane, Australia, Exercise Science) capped the scoring a little more than two minutes before halftime with her own unassisted score.  It is the first time a Statesmen has scored mulitple goals this fall.

Surprisingly, after the fast-paced first stanza, neither side was able to muster another ball in the netting after intermission.

Adriana Borjon (Sr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) managed two saves in the first half, while Andreya Ventura (Jr., Granada Hills, Calif., Psychology) added another stop in the second period.

“We played a solid game today and fully deserved the win,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said.  “From start to finish, we controlled the majority of possession and were smart on the ball.”

“The biggest factor today was that we scored on our early opportunities,” McGowan added.  “It took the pressure off the defense and midfield and allowed us to play freely and with confidence.  We have two games left in the season and we want to finish with two more wins to cement a place in the conference tournament.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids Wednesday to face Mount Mercy in Heart action at 1 p.m.
