Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa Indians ended the regular season 7-2, with a 47-6 win over the visitors.
For Oskaloosa Head Coach, the win helps set the stage for the team as they move into the post season, drawing 2 time state champions, Pella, in the opening round, set for Friday night.
Jenkins said that the final game of the regular season was a fun one for the team, with many players gaining extra experience on the field. The evening also highlighted many of the seniors and underclassmen who haven’t seen much time on the field yet.
“Overall, it’s was a great team win, and a lot of fun”, said Jenkins.
Unlike last week against Washington, the Indians were able to maintain better ball control, with fewer turnovers than the previous week.
Jenkins said that it was fortunate that the team was able to “get their bearings straight and play football like we should be playing: to our potential”.
Now the Indians will square off against the Dutch for the second time in the year. The two teams met the first time on Week 1, and the Indians came away on the short end of that contest, 37-13.
Oskaloosa is among three teams who have scored 13 points against the Dutch this year, while 5 teams have come up scoreless in their match-ups.
Jenkins said that during the first match-up, Oskaloosa was getting used to their new offense, and played hard; played with them, but some mistakes made the difference in the game. “We’re a lot better, they’re a lot better”.
“It is going to be a good match up”, added Jenkins, who stated that many may be overlooking Oskaloosa and favoring the Dutch who are 37-0. “The pressure is on them. They’re supposed to win.”
“To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best, so bring it on”, added Jenkins. “We’re excited to go after it”.
“We have a lot of respect for them,” says Jenkins. “They are coached very well and play really hard. They have good kids. They have good athletes.”
During the selection show, the Indian team responded with a loud cheer and jumped from their seats when the bracket showed them facing the Dutch.
Jenkins said that the team wants the rematch. “We’re not the team we were. I know they aren’t, either. I think the margin of improvement for our team is much greater, because we aren’t as established as they are. They’ve been doing what they do for a long time.”
The Indians and the Dutch will square off in Pella on October 28th, at 7pm, at the Pella High School field.
