Oskaloosa, Iowa – On Tuesday night, the Oskaloosa School Board met for their regular session. During the board’s comments section of the meeting, Nicholas Hansen informed the public he would be stepping down.

Hansen said his resignation will be effective November 1st. Hansen explained his departure is due to a promotion at his employer, and he will be relocating to a different state.

Hansen will be relocating to Monticello, Minnesota, for Cargill.

The board congratulated Hansen on his promotion.

According to Oskaloosa School Board Policy 202.4 – A vacancy occurs when a Board Member resigns, forfeits, or otherwise leaves the office. A vacancy also includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • failure to be properly elected;
  • failure to qualify within the time fixed by law;
  • failure to reside in the school district or director district;
  • or court order.

If a vacancy occurs prior to the expiration of a term of office, the vacancy will be filled by board appointment within 30 days of the vacancy. The newly-appointed Board Member will hold the position until the next scheduled school election.

If the Board is unable to fill a vacancy by appointment within 30 days after the vacancy occurs, the Board Secretary will call a special election to be held no sooner than 60 days and no later than 70 days after the vacancy occurred. A Board Member elected at the special election will serve the remaining portion of the unexpired term.

Per the Iowa Secretary of State: If the public chooses to petition for a special election, a petition for special election would require 30 percent of the total number of voters in the last school election or 100 signatures, whichever number is greater. In this case it would be 100 signatures and they would have 14 days from the date the appointment is made to get the signatures and file the petition with the school secretary, Chad Vink.

Hansen has nearly 3 years of his 4 year term remaining on the board.
