Oskaloosa, Iowa – A field of green shirts filled the downtown square in Oskaloosa on Monday morning, as the employees of Community 1st Credit Union helped to clean and spruce up not only downtown, but other areas, like the recreational trail.

Community 1st Credit Union employee and member solutions representative, Julio De Paz talked to Oskaloosa News about the efforts the employees were undertaking.

De Paz explained that the C1st Ambassadors want to help as much as they can, in an effort to give back to the community, which also helps to develop relationships within the community.

De Paz outlined the team’s goals of cleaning the downtown area of Oskaloosa and sprucing up the roundabout, while another group focused on portions of the recreation trail. The hope was to accomplish those goals before noon.

There was more than just Oskaloosa employees at the event. De Paz explained that employees from many of their locations joined, and that the approximately 230 employees were split into two teams, with each team focusing on a community.

Community 1st Credit Union CEO Greg Hanshaw spoke about the “people helping people” atmosphere that is part of the Credit Union atmosphere.

Hanhaw said that they were using Columbus Day, a day in which the banking industry doesn’t open, to spend time in one of the communities that Community 1st serves, “to give back to the community.”

Community 1st has was the first branch location for the company after it got its start in Ottumwa. Since then a lot of changes have happened, including the construction of a new branch building in Oskaloosa, along A Avenue.

The day of service to Oskaloosa also helps Community 1st build their team outside of the normal work environment. Hanshaw says that team building is important, and helps to better connect employees, members, and the community.
