MHP offers Holiday Advice for People with Diabetes
Oskaloosa – Mahaska Health Partnership Diabetes Educator Sharon Ferguson, RN, offers tips to help people with diabetes enjoy the holidays.
“There are 17 million Americans living with diabetes and everyone experiences the same temptations as holiday celebrations abound,” Ferguson, said.“Just because a person has diabetes does not mean they have to deprive themselves of all holiday treats. The key is balance and moderation.”
Ferguson recommends eating a healthy, balanced diet, low in saturated fat with a good amount of fiber and complex carbohydrates. “It is important for people with diabetes to figure out the balance of different foods that works for them.”
Although sugary candies and sweets are available in abundance during the holidays, Ferguson cautioned that other carbohydrates, such as mashed potatoes, can cause a surge in blood sugar. She suggested planning in advance when attending a gathering.
“If you know your mother is making your favorite pie, adjust your eating throughout the day so you can enjoy a slice and still keep your sugar balanced.”
Ferguson also recommends bringing a dish you know you can eat such as one made with sugar substitute or fruit puree instead of fat. “Living with diabetes does not mean you have to hibernate through the holidays. If you plan and make good choices, you can enjoy those special holiday treats.”
For those looking to receive support and information about managing their disease, consider attending the next meeting of the Free Diabetes Support Group, Dec. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. The group meets on the MHP campus in the Cedar Bluff Learning Center, use entrance #3.
