Statesmen Swept in Jayhawk State
Baldwin City, Kan.–The William Penn baseball team fell behind big in both of its Heart of America Athletic Conference games Tuesday and failed to make up the ground as it was swept by Baker.
William Penn (18-14, 9-10 Heart) lost the seven-inning game 5-4 and then dropped the nine-inning matchup 7-1.
The Wildcats (15-23, 9-11 Heart) erupted right away with four runs in the first inning; they added one more in the third as well.
Dominik Sawyer (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Psychology and Human Services) then cut the deficit to three runs in the fourth with a two-run double. Daniel Macias (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Physical Education) started the two-run fifth inning by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Anthony York (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Physical Education), while Robert Phiakeo (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) doubled home J.P. Rios (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) to make it 5-4 in favor of Baker.
Unfortunately, despite posting four doubles in the opener, the rally ended there. Both teams recorded eight hits. Brian Harrity (Fr., Castle Rock, Colo., Software Engineering) worked the entire game, striking out one with a pair of walks.
The nightcap was even less kind to the navy and gold as BU again rolled out to a big 5-0 lead. The lone Statesmen run came in the sixth when York’s single plated Macias. William Penn lost the hits battle 11-4 and had a rough go in the field with four errors.
Marshall Siordia (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology and Psychology) struck out one batter in a six-inning start, while Jacob Davidson (Sr., Bloomfield, Iowa, Psychology and Sociology) battled in two frames.
Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Thursday to host Mount Mercy in a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m.
