Fire destroyed this rural Rose Hill home on Sunday morning. The occupants were alerted to the danger by a dog.

Rose Hill, Iowa – Occupants of a rural Rose Hill home barely escaped an early morning fire on Sunday, thanks to their dog. There was no smoke alarm in the home, and the dog woke up the occupants by acting up. The flames were already so intense, one occupant had to escape out a window.

Cedar Township Fire Department Chief Sines said the department was dispatched to the fire at  6:25am.

According to the call, flames were already shooting out the windows of the home, located at 2483 Ventura Avenue.

The home and all of it contents were a total loss.

No persons were injured because of the fire. A dog was lost to the flames.

The investigation continues into the cause of the fire. Oskaloosa Fire Department assisted Cedar Township Fire by providing a tanker. The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and the Mahaska County E911 Center also assisted.

Fire Departments recommend the use of smoke alarms, and that you check your smoke alarm batteries in the fall and spring.
