Family fun was the theme of the day at MCRF’s Fall Fest.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – It’s never easy to start a new event. Often times it’s not until the third year that you get an idea of how well the event is really received.

On Saturday, Mahaska County Recreation Foundation (MCRF) hosted their first annual Fall Fest at the 5-plex located within the Lacey Complex.

“It’s crazy how many have come in,” said MCRF Executive Director Sherry Vavra. Estimated attendance was approximately 200 individuals. “I’m so excited.”

The Lacey Complex was extremely busy on Saturday. Besides the Fall Fest, there was the Stephen Memorial 5k and lots of soccer, from the youngest to the collegiate level. Vavra said they planned on holding the event in conjunction with the soccer tournament in order to have something else available to those families already at the facility.

“It’s a great day for all of this. It’s so fantastic,” said an enthusiastic Vavra.

Mahaska Drug, B&B Bedding, Mahaska Health Partnership and the Mahaska County YMCA helped to make the day by sponsoring games for the kids and families to do.

Kids could ride the ‘train’ to the pumpkin patch to pick out their own pumpkins that were donated by B&B Bedding. Or, families could square off in a game of giant Jenga. Trail Tram rides were also available.

Vavra said she’s happy with the turnout for Fall Fest. She admits she was worried that turnout may be low, but her worry went away as all the smiling faces filled the fields.

The money raised by the festival will help provide the facility and its users with needed services throughout the year.
