Kansas City, Mo.–The William Penn women’s soccer team led at halftime against Avila, but was unable to stay on top in a 3-2 Heart of America Athletic Conference setback Friday.

The Statesmen (4-4, 1-2 Heart) were outshot 15-7 by the Eagles (3-5-2, 1-2 Heart), who drew first blood with a goal in the 27th minute.

The visitors struck back at the 29:27 mark as Anyela Jimenez (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) snuck her own corner kick past the AU goalkeeper. WPU then claimed the advantage with Silvia Munoz (Sr., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education) poking home a pass from Hannah Baker (Fr., Adelaide, Australia, Biology) in the 36th minute.

Avila pulled even in the 55th minute, however, and finished off the rally at 74:33. Paced by Munoz’s three shots, the navy and gold had chances down the stretch, but failed to collect the equalizer.

Adriana Borjon (Jr., Willits, Calif., Exercise Science) managed six saves Friday with four coming after intermission.

“It is a big disappointment to put in this performance after playing so exceptionally well on Tuesday night,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “We were flat from the kickoff and never came close to playing at that same level again.”

“It will not get easier as we host Graceland next so we will have to dig deep,” McGowan added. “We had some positives from today in how we came back to hold the lead, so we know we can still play better.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Wednesday to host Graceland in Heart play at 5 p.m.
