Norma Jean Butler, Col. USAF Ret., 80, of Panama City, Florida, died Thursday, April 16, 2015, in Panama City. She was born August 22, 1934, in Oskaloosa, the daughter of Erwin and Frances Adair Butler.
Norma graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1952. She then completed nursing school at the old St. Joseph’s Hospital in Ottumwa.
Norma worked as a nurse for a short time at the V.A. in Michigan. She then joined the United States Air Force, retiring from there after 20 years as Colonel Norma Jean Butler.
Jean enjoyed classical music and played in a band in Florida for many years. She was also very active in the Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Florida. Jean also looked forward to her trips back to Iowa to help on the farm.
Her family includes her brother and his wife, Jon and Kris Butler of Oskaloosa; four sisters and their husbands, Kay (& Duane) Bunting of Douwsman, Wisconsin, Arlene Grimshaw of Ellijay, Georgia, Sue (& Gerald) Lamers of Earlham, and Joyce (& Richard) Behl of Spring Hill, Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Charles Grimshaw.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 24, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel at Oskaloosa with Reverend Thomas Spiegel officiating.
Private family burial will be in the Porter Grove Cemetery near Pella. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
No visitation is planned.
