The Oskaloosa High School is performing ‘The Phantom Of The Opera’ Friday and Saturday night.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa High School is performing the classic, ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ this Friday and Saturday night, March 6 and 7, at the George Daily Auditorium. Shows begin at 7:30 pm, with reserved tickets available at Browns Shoe Fit in Oskaloosa at a discount price versus the price at the door. Advanced prices, Adults $7, Students $3 and at the door, Adults $10, Students $5. Saturday tickets to the musical may be more difficult to find over the Friday night performance.

The musical is based upon the 1909 book written by French writer Gaston Leroux. It has since been adapted for film and musicals written by such composers as Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The evening is being directed by Kathy Akers and the musical direction by Chris Weinreich.

Rehearsals started at the end of January, and the nearly 100 persons involved in making the production happen is one of the largest productions Akers has had. “I love this show,” said Akers. That love of the musical was the driving factor behind her selecting it for this year’s performance.

The High School set out to perform a musical every two years, with the last one being Grease. She spoke with Weinreich about the possibility of selecting the musical a couple of years ago, after Grease, “and it just kind of progressed from there.”

The music is provided by an ensemble in the pit that is conducted by Weinreich. Musical artists include those from Oskaloosa High School, William Penn University and staff.

Akers says that she tries to select musicals that will best fit the talents of the students that will more than likely be performing. Akers was confident that the kids were capable of performing one of the most loved musicals of all time.
