Davenport–The Statesmen men’s bowling team nearly defended its league title at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn finished qualifying in second place with 9,012 pins in six regular games and four sets of Bakers. By placing in the top three, the Statesmen advanced to bracket competition, where they opened with a 3-2 win over #3 Grand View to reach the championship match.

Unfortunately, despite holding a 2-1 lead early, WPU eventually fell to top-seeded St. Ambrose 4-2.

Paced by Lucas Perdieu (So., DeWitt, Iowa, Public Accounting), who led the 67-person qualifying field with a 226.5 average, the Statesmen were actually leading the team standings after the first day. Unfortunately, SAU made up the difference and more in Baker play. Perdieu topped his day with a high game of 257.

Jacques Kaune (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) also started all six games with a 198.5 average, while Michael Applegate (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Biology), at 226.8, and Conan Mackey (Sr., Bray, Ireland, Public Accounting), at 181.8, both participated in four rounds.

Ryan Howard (So., King, N.C., Music) had a 198.7 clip in three games, while Kyle Clark (Sr., Aurora, Ill., Physical Education) posted an average of 169.7 pins in three rounds as well.

Travis Scott (Jr., West Saint Paul, Minn., Physical Education) (232.0) and Stian Hoff (So., Orkanger, Norway, General Accounting) (171.5) also competed in two games each for WPU’s top team.

William Penn’s JV was also on the lanes during the weekend, placing seventh out of 10 programs with 8,420 pins. The navy and gold were second out of the three JV squads in the competition, behind St. Ambrose’s JV by just four pins.

Cody Adair (So., Kearns, Utah, Undecided) headlined the second team with a 199.2 average in six games. Connor Frederick (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, History/Government), at 196.7, and Chris Brown (Fr., Winston-Salem, N.C., Business Management), at 193.2, also started all six games.

The trio of Kyle Reese (So., Chicago, Ill., Human Services), Cory Rissman (Jr., Yorkville, Ill., Industrial Technology), and Kevin Wesely (Jr., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Industrial Technology) all rolled in four rounds. Reese had a 179.8 mark, while Rissman finished at 179.5 and Wesely was at 178.3.

Next Up: William Penn now awaits its postseason fate. The Statesmen should be ranked high enough to compete in the xBowling Team Sectionals on March 14-15, but the question of where the team is headed will be answered this coming week.
